Divvy Sour Kush Smalls Strain Review: Effects, THC & More

I grabbed a 28g bag of Divvy’s Sour Kush smalls for $100.10 from a Calgary shop, and I’ll be honest, the second I opened it I knew what I was dealing with. Tiny little popcorn nugs, a whole bag of them. If you’ve been buying legal cannabis for a while, you know smalls can go either way. Sometimes it’s basically shake that got relabelled. Other times it’s perfectly decent flower that just didn’t grow big enough to hit the top shelf. Divvy’s Sour Kush, fortunately, falls into the second category, but there are some caveats worth knowing before you pick this one up.

How I Reviewed Divvy Sour Kush Smalls

I worked through the full 28g over about two weeks. Given the small bud size, most of it ended up going straight into a bowl or getting ground up for joints without much choice in the matter. I also ran a bit through a vaporizer at 185-195C to check the flavour more carefully. My tolerance is moderate to high, so take potency notes with that context in mind.

Divvy Sour Kush Strain Lineage

Sour Kush is a Sour Diesel x OG Kush cross, which is about as classic a pairing as you get in North American cannabis genetics. Sour Diesel brings the sharp, fuel-forward citrus punch and the cerebral sativa energy. OG Kush brings the earthy, piney body and the relaxing physical weight. The result is a balanced hybrid that sits right in the middle, not quite a couch-lock indica and not a race-your-brain sativa either.

This is a strain with a long history in the legacy market before legalization, and it’s held up well. The terpene profile of myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene maps exactly to what you’d expect from those genetics: earthy base, citrus top-end, with a bit of pepper and spice underneath.

Divvy Sour Kush Taste and Aroma

The smell is the best thing about this bag, full stop. When you crack it open, Sour Kush hits the nose with a sharp, tart lemon and pine combination that’s genuinely loud. There’s a pungent diesel layer underneath that comes from the Sour Diesel parentage, and it lingers on your fingers after you handle the weed. For a smalls bag at this price, the terpene preservation was honestly better than I expected. The myrcene and limonene are both showing up clearly.

In the bowl, the flavour is sour and piney on the inhale, with a woodsy, earthy exhale that’s pretty classic OG Kush territory. The diesel notes are there but they don’t dominate the way they would with something like a straight Sour D. The smoke is a bit rough, not harsh exactly, but it’s not the smoothest pull. A couple joints had some bite to the exhale.

Through a grinder it smelled fantastic, and grinding the smalls is basically unavoidable given the size of what you’re working with. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, but it is part of the reality of this product.

Divvy Sour Kush Effects and High

Sour Kush does what it says on the label. The high starts fairly quickly with an uplifted, giggly feeling that hits the head first. The mood elevation is genuine and not subtle. About 20 minutes in, the body relaxation starts to come in behind it, not couch-lock level, but enough that you’ll want to be sitting down. It’s a nice balance.

This is the kind of hybrid that works equally well for watching a movie or having a conversation. It doesn’t kill your social drive the way a heavy indica would, but it’s not so stimulating that it makes you anxious or restless either. It sits right in that comfortable middle ground.

For me the high lasted a solid two hours before tapering off into a pretty relaxed, slightly sleepy comedown. For people with lower tolerances, the sour kush cross at this THC range could definitely catch you off guard in a good way. For high tolerance smokers, you’ll want to smoke a reasonable amount to get there but it will get you there.

The one thing I’ll note is that the Cedrene in the terpene profile seems to add a bit of a woodsy, grounding quality to the high that keeps it from feeling scattered. It’s a functional stone, which is a good thing.

Bud Quality

Here’s where we have to have an honest conversation. The buds were small. Very small. We’re talking mostly popcorn nugs and a fair amount of smaller-than-popcorn pieces throughout the bag. A handful of pieces were borderline shake. When the product says smalls on the label, it means it, and this bag absolutely delivered on that promise.

The buds themselves had decent trichome coverage and a good mix of light and dark green with a solid amount of orange pistils. The flower was properly trimmed and didn’t feel undercured, which is something I’ve noticed can be an issue with smalls products from other brands. Divvy’s processing on this one was fine.

But for $100.10, the size of the buds is a legitimate issue. Smalls bags exist to pass savings onto the consumer in exchange for reduced bag appeal, and I’m not sure that trade-off fully works at this price. You can find better-looking large format products for the same money or close to it.

Is Divvy Sour Kush Smalls Good Value?

At $100.10 for 28g, it’s on the higher end of what I’d want to pay for a smalls product. If this was $80-85, this review would be more enthusiastic. The smell, the high, and the terpene profile are all legitimately good, but you’re paying nearly full ounce pricing for popcorn buds. That’s a tough sell.

If you’re someone who grinds everything anyway and doesn’t care about nug size at all, then the value calculus shifts. The smoke is good, the high is good, and the Sour Kush profile is one of the more interesting ones you’ll find in the large format category. But if bag appeal factors into your purchasing decisions even slightly, this bag is going to disappoint you at this price point.

Would I Buy Divvy Sour Kush Smalls Again?

Probably not at $100.10. If I saw it on sale for $80 or less, I’d grab it again without hesitation. The strain itself is solid, the terpenes are legit, and it smokes well enough that I finished the bag without any complaints about the actual product experience. The issue is purely the value math at full price.

There are too many other 28g options sitting in that $85-100 range that come with normal bud sizes. Paying a hundred bucks for popcorn nugs requires either a really good sale price or a real affection for this specific strain profile.
